Club Announces 2016 Youth of the Year

On behalf of our Board of Directors, Staff, and Members, we are proud to announce that Tyrese Downie, a 17-year-old Club Member, has been selected as our 2016 Youth of the Year!

Selected among several local outstanding youth, Tyrese will compete against 41 other Boys & Girls Club members for the Massachusetts Youth of the Year title and a $5,000 college scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). The Youth of the Year program honors our nation’s most awe-inspiring young people on their path to great futures and encourages all kids to lead, succeed and inspire. As the new Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Club of Chicopee, Tyrese is a true example of an extraordinary young man recognized by BGCA for his leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

About Tyrese:

Tyrese has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club of Chicopee for seven years.  He joined the Club, at 10 years old, after moving to Chicopee.  He struggled with confidence as a child, and credits the Club with helping him to break free of his shell and guiding him toward the poised, outgoing young man he is today.  Growing up as the eldest child in a single parent household, Tyrese learned at a young age how important it was to pitch in.  In addition to assisting his mother care for his younger siblings, Tyrese has volunteered many hours at the Club, assisted with the renovations at Nash Park in Chicopee, and volunteered at the Best Buddies Prom.

Tyrese has been a high school athlete since his freshman year.  This year, he was able to help his Chicopee Comprehensive High School varsity football team earn the Western Massachusetts Divisional III Title.  In addition to his school athletics, Tyrese handles a full honors course load and Career Technical Education training for drafting.  After graduation, he plans on continuing his education, with the goal of becoming an architect.  Tyrese is actively involved in the school’s Architecture Club, and placed third in architecture at SkillsUSA Massachusetts.
We are so proud of Tyrese, and look forward to watching him grow and reach for the goals he has set for himself.  He is another example of how…
